About the data

WikiSchools covers 23,334 schools across 17cities, built on the Government of India’s official school records.

Where it comes from

Every recognised school in India files an annual return to UDISE+, run by the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, Government of India. That data is public. We use the 2023–24 returns, published under the Open Data Commons Attribution Licence (ODC-BY).

What we add

The official record tells you a school has 900 pupils and 38 teachers. It does not tell you whether that is good. So we calculate:

• students per teacher, and how that ranks against every other school in the district
• students per classroom
• where the school sits by size within its district
• how year groups change between Class I, V and X
• the ten nearest schools, with real distances

These are our calculations, not government figures. The underlying numbers are official; the comparisons are ours.

What the numbers do not tell you

A good student-teacher ratio does not make a good school. This data says nothing about teaching quality, safety, how children are treated, or whether a school suits your child. Use it to narrow a list, then visit.

Figures also lag. Schools report once a year, so a school that has grown, shrunk or closed recently may still show older numbers.

Which schools appear

We publish a page only where there is enough real information to be useful — currently schools with at least 250 pupils, at least one teacher, an operational status and a usable location. Smaller schools are in our records but do not get their own page, because a page with nothing on it helps nobody.

Coverage is currently 17 cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Thane, Surat, Patna, Lucknow, Kolkata, Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad. More are being added.
