What is a UDISE code, and how can you verify one?

A UDISE code is the unique identifier given to a school when it is onboarded on the Government of India’s UDISE+ platform. It helps distinguish schools that may have the same or similar names and connects a school to its annual education record.

On WikiSchools, the code appears in the School details table and in the page URL. It is the safest field to use when reporting a correction or matching the same school across two data sources.

Is a UDISE code the same as a board affiliation number?

No. A UDISE code belongs to the UDISE+ school-information system. A CBSE affiliation number or a CISCE school code belongs to that examination board’s own system. A school can therefore have both a UDISE code and a separate board identifier.

When a form asks for a UDISE code, do not substitute the CBSE, CISCE or state-board number. If the purpose is unclear, ask the organisation that issued the form.

How to find and verify a school’s UDISE code

  1. Start with the exact school. Write down its full name, locality, district, state and PIN code. Similar names are common.
  2. Check the WikiSchools profile. Search by school name or UDISE code, then confirm the district and location shown on the profile.
  3. Cross-check the government record. Use the official UDISE+ Know Your School portal and search by code or school details.
  4. Match more than the name. Compare the district, locality, school category and management. A name alone is not enough.
  5. Ask the school if the records disagree. Request the code in writing and ask whether the school name or administrative location recently changed.

Why two records can look different

UDISE+ is an annual administrative system. A school may have changed its display name, management, address or operational status after the reporting period. Administrative district names can also differ from the city name people use in everyday conversation.

What to do if a code is missing or wrong

  • Try the official search using both the school name and location.
  • Check spelling variations and any former name used by the school.
  • Ask the school office to provide its UDISE code.
  • Do not copy a code from a nearby school with a similar name.
  • If WikiSchools displays the wrong match, use our correction form and include your evidence.

What a careful final check looks like

You should be able to connect one code to one school name and one administrative location. For an important application, save the source URL and the date on which you checked it. If any field remains uncertain, confirm it with the school or the relevant education authority before submitting the form.
